Duchess of Sussex reveals sweet tribute to couple’s first date in her ‘something blue’

Just when we thought we knew absolutely everything about the royal wedding, Meghan Markle goes and reveals a super sweet detail about the ‘something blue’ when she tied the knot with Prince Harry.

While being filmed for new documentary series, Queen of the World, the now Duchess of Sussex gets to see her stunning Givenchy gown for the first time since her May 19 wedding.

“My goodness. Amazing isn’t it?” she says, as curators of the Royal Collection Trust get ready to put the gown on display for a new royal exhibition. “Beautiful.”

Gently touching her Claire Waight Keller-dress, the Duchess goes on to reveal to documentary makers that there is a special detail hidden inside the dress.

“Somewhere in here, there’s a piece… Did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside?” Markle asked the interviewer, before explaining that the ‘something blue’ aspect of her nuptials was in fact a patch of “fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.”

How sweet is that?

It was previously thought that the Duchess had ticked off the blue element with the pair of white satin Aquazzura heels, which had baby blue painted soles.

Or that the stunning blue aquamarine ring she wore to the evening reception from Princess Diana’s personal collection was a nod to the blue tradition.

The ring, a stunning emerald-cut ring, surrounded by small diamonds on either side, and set in 24 carat yellow gold, featured a central jewel in a beautiful pale blue colour.

The documentary also reveals a further special detail about the veil the bride wore on her big day.

The intricate lace veil was actually adorned with flowers representing each country in the Commonwealth – a tribute to the bride’s new home.

“When people come they can find their flower,” she explains. “There are so many different, beautiful features there. I think also with Harry’s role as youth ambassador for the commonwealth, it was so important for us to have a spirit of inclusivity in the wedding.”

The Duchess also requested that two of her favourite flowers were on the veil – the wintersweet poppy, which grows at Kensington Palace, and the California poppy, the state flower of California.

“I stuck in a couple of flowers that were important to me as well, personally,” the Duchess added. “But there is a California poppy in there, which has nothing to do with the Commonwealth, but it is where I’m from.”
