CONGRATULATION TO Prince Harry
Prince Harry takes over from Duke of Edinburgh as Royal Marines figurehead
PRINCE Harry took over from his grandfather as Captain General of the Royal Marines yesterday.
Buckingham Palace announced the Queen had approved Harry’s appointment after he and Philip met senior officers there.
Harry, 33, had been tipped for the role since Philip, 96, announced his retirement from public duties in May.
The Duke of Edinburgh succeeded George VI to the honorary position 64 years ago on Coronation Day in 1953.
His last official engagement with the Royal Navy’s light infantry division was in August.
Yesterday he bade them a final farewell, receiving Major General Robert Magowan, Commandant General Royal Marines, and Major General Charles Stickland, Commandant General Designate, with Harry present.
Later in a video message to representatives of 163 states meeting in Vienna, Harry urged countries to eradicate landmines by 2025.
He called for efforts to be redoubled to meet the goal set out in the Mine Ban Treaty.
The Prince said: “Twenty years ago this year, my mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, walked through a cleared minefield in Angola.
“She witnessed first hand the pain and suffering of those whose lives and limbs had been destroyed by landmines.”
