Catherine Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William break royal tradition for Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s schooling
Kate Middleton and Prince William have been breaking royal rules since they first met and the way they choose to raise their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte is no exception.
Most recently, the royal couple has gone against previous royal family tradition with their choice of nursery for Princess Charlotte.
In a decision that is very different from the way that Princess Diana did things and other past choices made by members of the royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have decided to send Princess Charlotte to Willcocks Nursery School in London from January 2018.
A stone’s throw from the family home at Kensington Palace, Willcocks Nursery School is not only a completely different nursery school from the one attended by Prince William and Prince Harry when they were little in Notting Hill, but it also has a very different way of doing things.
Princess Diana and the royal family chose to send William and Harry to The Minors Nursery School in London, which prides itself on Outstanding Ofsted ratings and promotes ‘productive play’ for the children who go there. An establishment which ‘encourages success’, Diana’s choice of nursery for her two boys is not afraid to publicise the fact that they have ‘high expectations’.
Kate and Prince William, on the other hand, chose Willcocks Nursery because they reportedly thought it was ‘an ideal first step for Charlotte’s early year’s education’ and were impressed by the team that worked there.
A fellow parent describes the teachers at the nursery as ‘the kindest and most encouraging teachers’ and the school prides itself on having pupils that ‘learn through enormous fun.’
Like Kate and Prince William’s choice of school for Prince George in London, Princess Charlotte’s nursery prioritises ‘personal social and emotional development’ and places equal value on ‘understanding the world’ and ‘expressive arts and design’ as they do on teaching literacy and mathematics.
Kate and Prince William’s choice of nursery for Princess Charlotte reflect the hopes that they have previously expressed that their children will grow up understanding the value of kindness and self-expression.
‘Catherine and I are clear that we want both George and Charlotte to grow up feeling able to talk about their emotions and feelings’ William told CALMzine earlier this year.
