Royal wedding cake for SALE including 36-year-old piece from Diana’s special day

ROYAL wedding cakes from throughout the generations are going up for auction on June 23 and are expected to fetch thousands of pounds, as the royal family gears up for the upcoming nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19.

Slices of cake from the weddings of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981 and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 are among those up for sale after keen royal spectators stored them in freezers for years, if not decades.

Darren Julien, President of Julien’s Auctions, commented on the auction, saying: “We have a lot of interest, anything to do with the royal family in the United States and worldwide.

“They are highly collectible, especially us Americans we have a love affair with royal family.

“This is the closest most people will ever get to being invited to a royal wedding, by the slice of cake given to someone in attendance.”

Commenting on the anticipated success of the auction, he said: “Anything with Princess Diana or William and Kate will bring in the most, at this point in time the rest will do well too as it’s royal season.

“I think Princess Diana is a favourite more than others.”

Slices of cake from Diana and Charles’ 1981 wedding are estimated to fetch $1,200 (£882), and will come in a white box inscribed with the words “CD/ Buckingham Palace/ 29th July 1981”.

A slice of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s cake is expected to sell for $800 (£588).

A gift from the royal family is not something you throw out, so they put it in the freezer

600 slices of their cake were given away following their wedding, whilst 4,000 were sent as gifts, and the cake as a whole cost a whopping £56,000.

Pieces of cake from other royal weddings, including the nuptials of Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, are expected to fetch between $500 (£367) and $800 (£588).

Commenting on why people had decided to save historic slices of royal wedding cake, Mr Julien said: “A gift from the royal family is not something you throw out, so they put it in the freezer.”

However he warned potential buyers the slices of cake were “not edible”.

The auction will take place on June 23 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The cake will be able to be previewed at The Stafford Hotel in Beverly Hills and London prior to the auction.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also announced in March that pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of Violet Bakery in London, will be creating their wedding cake for the wedding reception.
